Workout: “Jax”

Not technically one of the ladies or one of the heroes, we dubbed this workout after the heroic effort that my son Jax is putting my wife through on her last legs of pregnancy.

All exercises completed with 20lb weight vest.

1 minute ring push ups

1 minute power clean 135 lbs

1 minute box jumps

1 minute rest

5 rounds for time.

The Toughest Two Minutes

Dubbed “the toughest two minutes in sports” by ESPN, the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge is tailor-made for CrossFitters. The participants, all active firefighters, scale a five-story tower with a 45-pound high-rise pack, pull a second pack up from the ground, rocket back down the tower, and hit every step en route. Picking up a 9-pound plastic hammer, they drive a 160-pound slug three feet along a skid. Abandoning this setup, the firefighters sprint through a serpentine course, pick up a charged fire hose, and drag it thirty feet through a pair of saloon doors. Pulling a handle, they unleash a jet of water on a circular target.

Ten feet distant, 175 pounds of dead weight waits for rescue. Grabbing the man-sized dummy around the torso, the firefighters backpedal fifty feet to the finish line, collapsing to the ground to the sound of a buzzer. The best athletes run the course in under 1:30.

    Added some material (Kelly’s Bday and the Scott Firefighter Challenge stuff).

    I think that Jon’s comments are valid. CrossFit will not make you an elite sprinter, but if sprinting isn’t your thing, it will make you better at it. Likewise, you will not become an Olympic level Oly lifter just doing CF, but if you are weak in this area, you will get better.

    I discovered some of this when I was doing a hell of a lot more CF training and not very much fighting. I would kill everyone I was ‘working out with’ but they could still give me a good run for my money on the mat. I still believe that there is no better fitness program for fighters (finding and fixing your weaknesses is paramount in fighting), but there is no substitution for time on the mat with an opponent.

    That being said.

    I want to get everything we need to do training for the Firefighter Challenge – like yesterday.

    About the old woman – not that I am trying to promote anything, but did anyone else notice that being relaxed, not stressed, and letting things pass is one of this woman’s secrets. . . and that she was born on 4/20. . .very interesting.

    Smoking a good cigar (which I do about once a year) makes me relaxed and reduces my stress. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a study (that I could show to my insurance company and wife) which shows this can help a person live longer.

    The 4/20 thing…that’s about smoking something else, right?

    So Jorgy came up with another good one today. 21-15-9 SDHP, Swings, & Cleans all done with KB with a 2 minute break in between rounds. Why the 2 minute break? Because he felt like throwing in the kicker that you couldn’t put the KB down. The forearms are hurtin a plenty right now.
