Sergeant Paul Starzyk was killed in the line of duty last Saturday in Martinez, California.

Inside Bay Area’s Article:

ABC Local Article: Memorial Service for Sergeant Paul Starzyk Today at 11am at the Sleep Train Pavilion.

Trying to save three women and three screaming children from an angry gunman, Martinez police officers Paul Starzyk and Ian Leong stood in a narrow hallway leading to a second-floor apartment on Saturday – and prepared to go in. . .

The gunman had walked upstairs to an apartment where Torres, two women and three children were. The children and one woman hid in a closet. Torres and the other woman hid in the kitchen between the stove and refrigerator, with Torres shielding the woman from sight. . .

When Felix Sandoval found Torres, he killed her. . .

. . . police officials said, gunman Felix Sandoval poked a hand out from behind the door and opened fire, blindly, with a .38-caliber revolver. Starzyk, a 47-year-old sergeant, was wearing a bulletproof vest but was hit twice in the upper body.

Starzyk initially returned fire along with Leong, but he was fatally wounded. . .

A memorial fund has been established for Starzyk’s wife, a Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputy, and their three young children. Donations can be made by phone at 925-228-7550, Ext. 855, or mailed to Contra Costa Federal Credit Union, Starzyk Family Memorial Fund, Account #57950-00, 1111 Pine St., Martinez, CA 94553. A funeral has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord.

Catalina Torres:

A scholarship in honor of Catalina Torres has been established at Diablo Valley College. Donations can be made to Diablo Valley College Foundation, 321 Golf Club Road, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523. The memo line of the check should read “Catalina Torres Scholarship Fund.” A funeral has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at St. Catherine’s Church in Martinez.

It seems both Starzyk and Torres died “in the line of duty”. This is a grim reminder that living for something bigger than ourselves doesn’t always make sense in perspective of man’s world.
While my sweat, this evening, won’t put a dent in the trauma those children will have to live with for the rest of their lives, nor will it return lost love ones, I hope that the offering I make will register in eternity, somehow.
Praise God we have policemen who bear the brunt of the ugliness that comes with man.
“The Shield” is much more than a metaphor!

Was looking through the mothership archives and found this painful little number…
    150 squats + run 800m + 150 squats for time.

    God Bless The Warriors…
If you have a reason to fight…remember it today.
If you don’t have something worth dying for…you may already be dead.

Hmmm, Dr. King really was onto something…

It feels great to be back, I missed you all and it was good to see the DCF Family again. Kicked my own ass with “Randy” followed by “Nate”, still not enough pain and suffering to make up for the lost HERO’s. You will always be remembered Sgt. Starzyk.

Jamie and I did “Josh” today for her birthday and for ‘those who have gone before’. She said she wanted an 11min workout for her birthday, and she just about got it.

    JJ – 5:59 Rx’ed
Jamie – 11:13 (20lb bar OHS, and Grn band pull ups)
