‘Shortcuts’ Of The Mind Lead To Miscalculations Of Weight And Caloric Intake, Study Finds

“. . . When estimating calories, study participants assumed portion sizes were culturally typical and guessed no caloric differences between small and large portions. . .

. . .”We have evolved in a very different environment,” Geier said. “It used to be that food was scarce, and you ate what was available because you didn’t know where your next meal would come from. That is not the case anymore. Although we have yet to prove this, we believe that the ecology of eating in the current food environment has become an example of the atypical situations demonstrated in this new article, which may be an explanation for why almost 70 percent of American adults are either overweight or obese. This represents a cognitive explanation for why America is gaining so much weight. The eating environment has morphed into an atypical scenario where our usually helpful mental mechanisms betray us.”

Cute picture! Looks like Tami’s eye is coming along. =)
That’s an interesting article on estimating calories. I remember seeing typical portion sizes of the 1950’s and the 1990’s a “few years” back that was pretty enlightening. The calorie creep has been significant!
This is one reason the Zone diet is such a cool thing for people (even short term). It helps you improve your eye-stomach coordination.

17 peeps for hang snatches today!!
Everyone did a really great job with this today. Its a tough one so I’m glad some of you stuck with it to get the proper form down.
    After we did a little Metcon called;
“This is my med ball, their are many like it but this one is mine”
As you can guess, it was a bunch of stuff to do using a med ball.
    Good times.
We had several new faces to 6am. Great seeing Rodil and Juliana.

We will see our 6am peeps for fight fit tomorrow.
Its been a week of eating bad and an all out booze fest.
I dont want to come back to Las Vegas or “Lost Wages”
for a long long time. cant wait to see you guys.

Don’t worry guys…I will MAKE SURE Holly gets a tan this weekend.

  • Mark L.

    That was cold, Carry.

  • casperlegs

Mental note to self…only pose with bare legs next to Nicole Kidman from now on.

Wow you know its a good friend when they can cap on you and it makes you laugh out loud at yourself. Just for you Carry I’ll back down from spf 45 to 15 this weekend but bring dark sunglasses just in case.

  • Mountain

Jamie, you stole Big Dave’s line… but you forgot to ALLCAPS it.

  • Craig

    Mountain: priceless.

I’m more concerned with Holly’s squat form – Sarah & Donna are showing a nice lumbar curve (and Donna seems very happy about it). Remember: shoulders back, arch the lower back.

Yvonne and Tami clearly didn’t want to join in on the fun.

    What a tough WOD.

930 class- Brook, Tami, Anita and Michele all worked very hard on their form. Its a tough one to put together but they did GREAT!!

1030 class- Meg H has amazing snatch form. Great work from Ron L!! The stretching is really working. Keep it up!

  • 6am...Nancy

6am…Matt – I hope you check back today… can’t wait to see you both at Fight Fit tomorrow… its’ not the same with you and Eleni!! Don’t let me down! 🙂
Hey, I borrowed your tag line for today…

Briones hill sprints are no Joke.

Carry, Josh and I hit it hard today sprinting up the steepest slopes we could find.

First effort (about 2500m) about 3m 30s (just up).

Second effort (about 350 up and 350 down) about 4m 30s (up and back down).

Third effort (about 400m up, 400m down, then 200m up, 200m down) about 10 min effort.

Fourth effort 400m up, tabata style (20 run, 10s walk) to top, then sprint 400m back down.

Low back hurt the most for me. That and my feet would get super hot from the friction inside my shoes on the downhill runs.

Downhill never seemed to be a problem for us. Exhaustion was never a problem going down. Just not eating it was the only thing slowing us down.

We gotta do those runs at least once or twice a week. Sundays? Mornings?

  • jorgy

Sundays??? That is the lord’s day designed to nurse your hangovers… We’ll see

  • Craig

Wow, Carry. I love your enthusiasm and I love that hill by the way. Close to my house.

Great power snatch improvements in 5, 6 & 7 tonight – really impressive folks. It’s just a jump and a catch. Marni, sorry ’bout the scrapes and bruises – great form, however!

Gotta love the blue suede oly shoes! I wore both a suede pair and a leather pair last weekend and suede pair are a lot more comfortable.
Jolie is so cute! She had a pair of high top sequence converse that day!
