Article: Progressive strength training benefits older people in their daily life.

“. . . Muscle strength decreases naturally as people age. This reduction in muscle strength could affect older adults carrying out daily activities. Progressive resistance strength training is a type of strength training that uses free weights, exercise machines, or elastic bands to strengthen muscles. Key to this type of this exercise is adjusting the resistance, or weight, according to the person’s progress. This exercise can be prescribed to help older adults gain the strength necessary to carry out everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, bathing or doing housework. . .”

Nice laid back class today. Not too many people. Not too hot. . . (with the exception of D-Roe’s green and black knee high socks. Those were DEAD SEXY.

    After class – DT : 9:21

Far cry from my previous time of 7:51. Wheezing wasn’t as bad this time, but a lack of sleep and a few too many ciders is probably the reason. Had the first 3 rounds in about 3 minutes, then my foot started to cramp up.

Nursing my fear of oly workouts, I scaled down to 90#. After a 14 minutes workout, I felt like I could have done more.

But then after talking to Jeff B and JJ post-WOD, I found out that my deadlift form is the perfect example of what not to do. That’s probably why my back has been bothering me the past few weeks but I think I am on the right track now.

And though my muscles don’t feel terribly taxed, my body seems to be setting into some general fatigue. I think it is still adjusting to Paleo but it also could have been the delicious Tapatia gorge w/ Tyler and Maren post farmers market or the relaxingly warm Sunday afternoon. All this calls for is a basket of grapes and a nap.

    That was a massacre.

Today went pretty well, other than opening up the skin on the inside of both of my thumbs. I’m the proud owner of two new 1/2 inch rips. I was pretty happy when all was done at 19:49rx. There was a lot of resting though, so I really have to pick up on the cardio side of things more. 7:51 and 9:21, wow. Maybe there was more resting than I first thought.

Leads me to ask, should I have lowered my weight and done this workout faster, or did I gain more benefit from pushing this one out rx in 20 minutes?

Tyler, was your resting more because, as you say, your cardio isn’t up to par or because your muscle’s fatigue prevented you from keep going, 155lb is a lot of weight, cardio is one aspect but I feel that you need to work on the strength part, JJ is pretty strong and has a solid Olympic’s lifts technique that helped him on this WOD, next time lower the weight and you will get a great metabolic conditioning and a good all around muscles fatigue

Hey all, checking the site and doing the WOD’s are the only thing keeping me sane out here. Just want to throw in a funny little story about my attempt at DT. There is an O-lifting set up here and i threw on the two 45’s and what I thought were a couple 10lbs to get to the 155. Completed the first three rounds in about 20 min and felt like Sh!T before realizing that they were 10kg’s on each side bumping me up to 180, about 30lbs over my body weight right now, mess hall food sucks. It took me another 20 min to finish the workout. I am going to hit it up again in a coupele weeks using the proper weight and see what happens.

Miss everyone. Hope all is well and it does not get to hot out there.

I’m sad I missed this workout.

Finished the 2nd half marathon today in 2:53 down 21 minutes from last year. 21 pounds lighter thanks to Crossfit, so a pund a minute. Still probably the biggest guy to cross the finish line at 270 though…

Thanks Luca, I think you are right, it is more muscle fatigue than anything. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I am anywhere near JJ with this stuff, but to have a time 2-3 times slower means that there are many things that I need to do to improve, and it looks like one of those is to get stronger!! Thanks, back to the grind tomorrow morning….
