“Must be a bad-ass.”

We take fitness seriously and we demand a lot of our coaches. Our primary goal is to provide an amazing coaching & class experience for our members. Thus, our Coaches must be “bad-ass” at what they do: Coaching. We require them to go though our Observing & Assisting  program under the guidance of our Head Coach. We provide mandatory training on all aspects of coaching: from one-on-one sessions to effective group classes along with requiring our coaches to “practice what they preach.”

Every coach on our staff, including the owners, were doing CrossFit on their own before becoming a coach with Diablo. Our coaches know what the customer experience is like because they were all clients. They are passionate about fitness, nutrition and the CrossFit methodology. They constantly devour information, videos, books, and blogs on everything related to fitness, nutrition and CrossFit. They pursue new Certifications every year. They compete regularly in CrossFit competitions, triathlons, 10ks, Marathons, and more. Their reward is your results. Go ahead, ask them. Better yet, challenge them. They’ll exceed your expectation, guaranteed.

Jamie was born and raised here in the East Bay. Grew up wrestling for the Pleasant Hill Wrestling Club, which is were his athletic background began. After wrestling he got into Cross Country and Downhill mountain bike racing in search of some type of competition outlet. One of the personal trainers at his old gym talked him into doing “Fran” (which is one of CrossFits benchmark workouts). After that workout he was hooked. He started following the CrossFit Main Site, CrossFit Journal, then became a CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1) Trainer. Not only is it his outlet for his competition, but it is his tool to help teach people how to move and be healthy. Jamie says,”Competitions are a lot of fun, but the feeling I get when someone does there first pull up or picks up a lot of weight when they thought they couldn’t is way more satisfying for me.”

Before CrossFit Jamie Lee was a Personal trainer at a local Health Club. Once he was introduced to CrossFit, he knew that it was the most efficient way to teach Fitness to anyone new to it and to experienced Athletes. It is very difficult to do CrossFit at a “Globo Gym”, due to the lack of functional equipment, not to mention that the big globo gyms do not allow heavy strength training, because dropping weights is a distraction to the other members. Thats when Jamie decided to branch out and opened his own CrossFit Affiliate (CrossFit Burn), where he received some great experience. After running and programming for his own gym, Jamie closed his gym and joined the Diablo CrossFit Family. Jamie says, “I love it here, it is such a great atmosphere, and I am receiving all the Support I need to share CrossFit with our community”.

Vanessa was born and raised in sunny Southern California. During college she joined a women’s full contact football team and ended up playing for five years as the starting running back. Her love of the gym, playing sports, and getting sweaty led her to earn a Kinesiology degree with an emphasis on Sports Performance. Vanessa became a personal trainer at a young age and within a few years began coaching various elite level athletes.

In 2012 after watching the CrossFit games on TV Vanessa’s wife encouraged her to do her first CrossFit wod…Fran. Of course they had no idea what scaling was, so doing Fran at the men’s RX’d weight with all strict pull-ups beat her up…naturally she was hooked. Fast forward to NorCal Regionals 2013 the crazy excited DCF fans and all of their amazing athletes competing caught Vanessa’s attention. The next week they moved to Concord and starting training at Diablo Pleasant Hill. Following the Plan D programming Vanessa made huge gains and made it onto Diablos Anejo regional competition team. Vanessa’s favorite part of coaching is seeing people achieve a goal that they have been working towards…getting to wear workout clothes everyday is a close second.

  • Paige Sousa Coach

    San Jose Coach

    • CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1) Trainer
    • CPR, AED, & First Aid Certificate

Paige grew up In the Central Valley of California where she dabbled in multiple sports: gymnastics, softball, track and field, dance and basketball. Basketball took over her life around age 13 when she gave up all other sports to focus on it year round. After 13 years of school and competitive traveling basketball, Paige finished up her second and final season of Junior College play in 2011. She immediately entered the coaching world the same year for her former high school girls’ basketball team. in 2012, she was hired as an assistant coach for Modesto Junior College, where she was still attending as student. She spent two years coaching there before leaving to finish her degree.

During this time, Paige began to focus on fitness at a globo-gym; becoming a fan of bodybuilding style training. But without a competitive atmosphere, this soon lost its appeal and she joined a local gym who specialized in training college football players in 2012. It was there she learned how to use fitness to become more athletic and powerful, being introduced to the clean and jerk. (Which is still her favorite lift and first true love.)

When Paige moved San Jose to complete her degree at SJSU, the only similar option of training that let her drop weights and compete with the guys was CrossFit.

Since becoming a member of Diablo Crossfit Moxie in 2014, Paige has become fully intoxicated by the “kool-aid,” despite a traumatic lesson on high intensity with a 1k row time trial on her first day. She competed in her first RX team competition just 4 months after joining. Since then, she has competed in Olympic weightlifting meets and several other local Crossfit competitions in the South Bay Area.

Paige’s background of coaching led her to ditch her original career path of Professional and Technical Writing and get her Crossfit Level 1 certification at the Ranch in 2016. She also plans on completing her CF Weightlifting, USAW and CF-L2 certifications in the future. Paige values the community of CrossFit more than anything, believing the power of people sweating together and supporting each other is what truly makes CrossFit more than just a strength and conditioning program.

Erika grew up locally in Walnut Creek; always an active girl growing up she played soccer and swam for Valley Vista swim team. Erika found Diablo CrossFit in 2009 through her sister who had been a member for about a year. She can still remember her first workout, the “Newbie” 400 m run, 10 pull ups (that she had to use a green band for), 20 push-ups, 30 sit-ups and 40 air squats for time. At the end of it her arms were sore, it hurt to laugh and her legs were wobbly, yet she couldn’t wait to come back for more!!

It didn’t take long for Erika to realize that CrossFit was going to be a bigger part of her life than she originally expected. Shortly after joining DCF she partook in a summer paleo nutrition challenge. This is Joselito by day… and Jeremy by night. Jeremy took his first CrossFit intro Class in 2010 at CFM. Never hearing of CrossFit and not knowing what he got himself into, he found himself “drinking the juice” 5 days a week. He instantly fell in love with the community and made a commitment to attain his CrossFit Level 1 Trainer to become a coach at Diablo.

Jeremy has also attained his 3rd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and was an assistant head coach by the age of 14, working with ages 4 years old to 75 years old.

Levi’s journey began in the small state of West Virginia where he was born and raised. Levi grew up playing a variety of sports and always enjoyed the challenges sports provided. Once getting into high school Levi made the decision to focus all of his efforts on football as his dream was to go as far as he could with it. After high school he went on to play football at Indiana University for some time. After spending time playing Big Ten football he decided that he was ready to start a new chapter in his life as what was once his dream was no longer his passion. He vividly remembers his first exposure to CrossFit as it occurred coming home from college on a particular weekend. Levi recalls he came home from lunch on a Sunday afternoon just before having to head back to school. He sat down to watch TV for a few minutes and this thing called the “CrossFit Games” were on ESPN. After what was suppose to be just a few minutes turned into a couple hours of fascination watching all of the episodes. It was at that moment when Levi’s new passion was ignited. After finishing the school year he came home for the summer and tried CrossFit for the first time that very next week. It only took one workout for Levi to realize that this was his new path and the rest was history. Levi saw CrossFit as a way to express his passion for health, fitness, and wellness and help others in their journey of achieving optimal health. Levi loves the community that CrossFit has created and how it brings out the best in everyone regardless of where they are in their health journey.

Born and raised in Walnut Creek, Chad has returned home after living in the South Bay for several years. Chad was always an active person growing up, working for the City of Walnut Creek Recreation Department for over 13 years, participating in track and water polo throughout high school. In college, Chad continued running track for Cal Poly-SLO. Off the track, Chad served on several University Student Programs and working as an Athletic Trainer in the Intercollegiate Athletics Department.

After graduating college, Chad felt strongly that one should practice what they preach so he embarked on a new lifestyle of fitness beyond only running. Having been a ‘rail’, ‘bean-pole’ and ‘stick’ most of his life, Chad worked with a trainer for over a year, where he was able to gain 50 lbs. of muscle.

Achieving his own goals lead him to want to help others by pursuing a certification and career as a personal trainer and then manager for 24 Hour Fitness. It was here that Chad was introduced to CrossFit by one of his trainers. That was 7+ years ago, and he has not looked back.

Chad now shares his passion for fitness with the corporate employees of Albertsons-Safeway as their General Manager for their Fitness Centers in Pleasanton, Phoenix, and Boise…in addition to those @ Diablo. His motto: “Life is what you make of it. Live it to the fullest by constantly moving. That is what a healthy and fit lifestyle is all about.”

Joby was born in New York, spent most of her summers in the Dominican Republic (as all kids of Dominican families do) and at 16 moved to SoCal. As a child and through high school she dabbled in many sports such as indoor soccer, swimming, gymnastics, softball, and cross country running. While going to college and working as a Medical Assistant there was no time for sports and decided to take up dance. The awareness of her love of body movement led her to leave her studies of Chinese Medicine and start a career as a Latin Dancer. She ran one of the most successful Salsa dance companies for 10 years and is a pioneers in what is known as  “L.As Style Salsa”. Joby’s career gave her the opportunity to travel to more than 45 countries, all over the U.S. and as an accomplished choreographer/dancer to the stars in Hollywood.

In 2004, she decided to make a shift to focus less on her career and more on her husband and daughter. Feeling the rut of 20 years of dance she discovered her passion for the gym and started her fitness journey. She began with a few years of training under a body builder, went to circuit training and kickboxing and ended up as a Zumba/dance fitness instructor to kids and adults for 3 years. As her husband was a Marine this moved them from SoCal to Georgia and then to Florida where as a family they found CrossFit. CrossFit has been the pinnacle point in fueling her fire to the rest of her life. As Joby enjoys pushing her boundaries she took up CrossFit competitively as a hobby and uses her gains in her adventures that range anywhere from running a Spartan race to hiking the Machu Picchu trail in Peru.

When moving to NorCal she joined the administrative team at Diablo by working the front desk. Joby proudly shares the story to all those who are considering joining Diablo CrossFit. “When I first moved here, I visited 6 different Crossfit gyms before deciding on one. Diablo intimidated the heck out of me, even after 4 years of experience but you know what sold me? The Coaches! They care about your progress and what you as an individual need help with.” Even on their off time, if they walk by and see you need help. They will not hesitate to step in. That to me is priceless.”

While working on her goal to make it to the Master Qualifier now at 50 Joby feels it’s never to late to pursue your passions especially when you have such a support system such as the Diablo Community. “If you want to be great, surround yourself with greatness!”

  • Krystina Mendes Customer Service

Krystina was born and raised in Walnut Creek. She started Greek Dance and Ballet from age 3, then started to incorporate jazz and hip hop. At age 15 she started competing for Dance Connection and Folk Dance Federation “FDF” in LA.

While attending San Francisco Institute of Cosmetology, Krystina was very into Tae Bo. She soon became an instructor at “Knuckle up” in Vallejo and trained under Billy Blanks.

Krystina was wanting something more and started hitting a plateau. I saw my best friend and step sister within the same month after not seeing each of them for about a year. They looked fabulous! They said they had been doing CrossFit. They mentioned there was one close to my house called “Diablo CrossFit” that was suppose to be pretty good.

She walked into Diablo on the 4th of July 2011. No one was in the gym except for 2 coaches and signed up not knowing what CrossFit was about, she didn’t even ask any questions. Krystina showed up the next day thinking, “what did I just get myself into?” Six years later it was one of the best decisions she had ever made. Its amazing to see what a natural human body can do. You will never really hit a plateau. Theres always something new to strive for, weather its a new lifting weight, a faster time, or being able to recover faster. Krystina even tried out a few competitors at both Rookie Rumble 2012 and Reindeer Games 2013.

Krystina has found more than just strength and fitness at Diablo, she met the Love of her life, Sam Mendes. In July of 2016 they married at Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Oakland with a traditional Greek wedding; if you can guess a majority of the guests were from Diablo.

When not at Diablo she is working as a hair stylist in Alamo. Her career has her traveling to New York twice a year to be part of the fashion week team back stage for Bumble & Bumble. While there she continues her education at the B&B university in NY.

    • CrossFit Powerlifting Trainer
    • CrossFit Strongman Trainer

Andrew has been a lifelong athlete from the days of middle school little league to a couple of triathlons in college, but his true passion lies in the outdoors, more specifically, rock climbing. He was born and raised in the Bay Area and then found his way to the East Bay to attend St Mary’s College. While at SMC he worked at REI and then at Diablo Rock Gym where he continued to pursue his addiction to climbing and the outdoors.

Andrew found CrossFit through their website in 2008 and took his first class at Berkeley Ironworks when it used to be home to CrossFit EastBay. He remembers his first two workouts being The Filthy Fifty and Fight Gone Bad. Although he doesn’t remember his score, he was hooked on the intensity that was necessary. After years of integrating CrossFit as a training tool for climbing he decided to focus more time on it and let climbing take a sideline.
