“Must be a Bad-Ass.”

We take fitness seriously and we demand a lot of our coaches. Our primary goal is to provide an amazing coaching & class experience for our members. Thus, our Coaches must be “bad-ass” at what they do: Coaching!

Every coach on our staff, including the owners, were doing CrossFit on their own before becoming a coach with Diablo. Our coaches know what the customer experience is like because they were all clients. They are passionate about fitness, nutrition and the CrossFit methodology. They constantly devour information, videos, books, and blogs on everything related to fitness, nutrition and CrossFit. They pursue new Certifications every year. They compete regularly in CrossFit competitions, triathlons, 10ks, Marathons, and more. Their reward is your results. Go ahead, ask them. Better yet, challenge them. They’ll exceed your expectation, guaranteed.

Jennifer was first introduced to CrossFit in 2009 by one of her Krav Maga instructors in Chicago and she was immediately hooked. That same year she had the opportunity to compete on the Windy City CrossFit Team at the 2009 CrossFit Games in Aromas, California. She would compete with her team again in 2010 and at the Regionals in 2011. These experiences further cultivated her passion for the sport and she quickly turned her private personal training job into a full time CrossFit Coach position.

Jennifer moved to the Bay Area to escape the cold winters and seek new adventures, and found CrossFit Moxie in 2012 (and later Diablo CrossFit in 2017). She is extremely passionate about continuing education and actively seeks out programs to enhance her skill set. Jamie was born and raised here in the East Bay. Grew up wrestling for the Pleasant Hill Wrestling Club, which is were his athletic background began. After wrestling he got into Cross Country and Downhill mountain bike racing in search of some type of competition outlet. One of the personal trainers at his old gym talked him into doing “Fran” (which is one of CrossFits benchmark workouts). After that workout he was hooked. He started following the CrossFit Main Site, CrossFit Journal, then became a CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1) Trainer. Not only is it his outlet for his competition, but it is his tool to help teach people how to move and be healthy. Jamie says,”Competitions are a lot of fun, but the feeling I get when someone does there first pull up or picks up a lot of weight when they thought they couldn’t is way more satisfying for me.”

Before CrossFit Jamie Lee was a Personal trainer at a local Health Club. Once he was introduced to CrossFit, he knew that it was the most efficient way to teach Fitness to anyone new to it and to experienced Athletes. It is very difficult to do CrossFit at a “Globo Gym”, due to the lack of functional equipment, not to mention that the big globo gyms do not allow heavy strength training, because dropping weights is a distraction to the other members. Thats when Jamie decided to branch out and opened his own CrossFit Affiliate (CrossFit Burn), where he received some great experience. After running and programming for his own gym, Jamie closed his gym and joined the Diablo CrossFit Family. Jamie says, “I love it here, it is such a great atmosphere, and I am receiving all the Support I need to share CrossFit with our community”.

Natalie has a passion for fitness and people. She began her athletic career at a young age and was instantly hooked on aquatic sports. Natalie quickly made the switch from competitive swimming to competitive year round water polo. After completing her high school career as a league MVP, Natalie joined the San Jose State University women’s water polo team. There she played 4 years of Division 1 water polo team and helped her team achieve top 10 finishes in the nation. Natalie spent an unusual amount of time in the SJSU weight room, completely enthralled with the intricacies of this land sport that lent itself to strength and power!

Following her collegiate career, the transition to CrossFit and its competitive atmosphere, only seemed natural. Natalie graduated with a BS in psychology and loves to work with people to uncover their fullest potential as they reach their health and fitness goals. After coaching swimming and water polo for years, Natalie felt compelled to move coaching from passion to profession and started coaching CrossFit. Her devotion to fitness and drive to learn, keep her motivated to improve her education daily in order to serve the members of Diablo CrossFit Moxie. Natalie has her CrossFIt L1 and is in the process of completing her Precision Nutrition L1. Paige Sousa
Paige Sousa

Coach

Paige grew up In the Central Valley of California where she dabbled in multiple sports: gymnastics, softball, track and field, dance and basketball. Basketball took over her life around age 13 when she gave up all other sports to focus on it year round. After 13 years of school and competitive traveling basketball, Paige finished up her second and final season of Junior College play in 2011. She immediately entered the coaching world the same year for her former high school girls’ basketball team. in 2012, she was hired as an assistant coach for Modesto Junior College, where she was still attending as student. She spent two years coaching there before leaving to finish her degree.

During this time, Paige began to focus on fitness at a globo-gym; becoming a fan of bodybuilding style training. But without a competitive atmosphere, this soon lost its appeal and she joined a local gym who specialized in training college football players in 2012. It was there she learned how to use fitness to become more athletic and powerful, being introduced to the clean and jerk. (Which is still her favorite lift and first true love.)

When Paige moved San Jose to complete her degree at SJSU, the only similar option of training that let her drop weights and compete with the guys was CrossFit.

Since becoming a member of Diablo Crossfit Moxie in 2014, Paige has become fully intoxicated by the “kool-aid,” despite a traumatic lesson on high intensity with a 1k row time trial on her first day. She competed in her first RX team competition just 4 months after joining. Since then, she has competed in Olympic weightlifting meets and several other local Crossfit competitions in the South Bay Area.

Paige’s background of coaching led her to ditch her original career path of Professional and Technical Writing and get her Crossfit Level 1 certification at the Ranch in 2016. She also plans on completing her CF Weightlifting and USAW certifications in the future. Paige values the community of CrossFit more than anything, believing the power of people sweating together and supporting each other is what truly makes CrossFit more than just a strength and conditioning program.

Growing up, Jon was the kid who got out of breath playing soccer for 10 minutes. In high school and college, he dove head first into the world of endurance sports, with distance running and triathlons.  He was repeatedly injured, so he decided to become a physical therapist to learn how to treat his own injuries! In 2014, Jon found CrossFit and fell in love with lifting heavy weights, running fast, and practicing handstands. He became a coach at San Francisco CrossFit to help teach others how do all of the movements he struggled with himself. In 2011, Coach Guz (no one calls him by his first name) suffered through his 1st CrossFit workout at CrossFit Moxie. He had finished his time as a US Marine and moved to San Jose, CA. Of course he considered himself to be in excellent shape. However, that very first CrossFit workout kicked… his… butt…he was hooked.

From that day forward CrossFit (Nutrition, Conditioning, Gymnastics, and Weightlifting) became his passion. He read everything he could on the subject, watched every video, and even began helping out at CrossFit Moxie in his spare time. CrossFit Moxie soon became his family.

A lot has changed since the day he found CrossFit and CrossFit Moxie in 2011, but his passion for it has only grown. Whether you consider yourself an athlete, soccer mom, arm chair quarterback, or just want to be fit… Coach Guz and the staff here at CrossFit Moxie are ready to help you achieve your goals.

Coach Guz still serves our country in the California Army National Guard as a Combat Medic. He owns a Cane Corso named Kara, enjoys black coffee, kit kats, and tacos.

Erika grew up locally in Walnut Creek; always an active girl growing up she played soccer and swam for Valley Vista swim team. Erika found Diablo CrossFit in 2009 through her sister who had been a member for about a year. She can still remember her first workout, the “Newbie” 400 m run, 10 pull ups (that she had to use a green band for), 20 push-ups, 30 sit-ups and 40 air squats for time. At the end of it her arms were sore, it hurt to laugh and her legs were wobbly, yet she couldn’t wait to come back for more!!

It didn’t take long for Erika to realize that CrossFit was going to be a bigger part of her life than she originally expected. Shortly after joining DCF she partook in a summer paleo nutrition challenge. At the end of the challenge she was running faster, lifting heavier and could link her pull-ups, which were none-existent 3 months earlier! She was so motivated by how the coaches and members inspired her and filled the need for community, that she decided she wanted to be a coach who could help change people’s lives for the better.

This is Joselito by day… and Jeremy by night. Jeremy took his first CrossFit intro Class in 2010 at CFM. Never hearing of CrossFit and not knowing what he got himself into, he found himself “drinking the juice” 5 days a week. In 2012, with a career decision moving him to Contra Costa County, he did his research making his way as a regular member at Diablo CrossFit. He instantly fell in love with the community and made a commitment to attain his CrossFit Level 1 Trainer to become a coach at Diablo.

Jeremy has an extensive, and somewhat closeted background. (No pun intended.) He started dancing at the age of 7 and made his way into professional dancing at a talent agency in Southern California by the age of 18. He has also performed with a number of collegiate dance competition teams and companies. Another “sport” he has kept a secret; At the age of 12 he was a bowler and became Jr. Pro by the age of 18. Non-the-less, his training and coaching did not stop there. Jeremy has also attained his 3rd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and was an assistant head coach by the age of 14, working with ages 4 years old to 75 years old.

The CrossFit community, and the variety of personalities and different skill sets have inspired Jeremy to make a difference in peoples’ lives which also happens to enrich his life as well.

In college, Chad continued running track for Cal Poly-SLO. After graduating college, Chad felt strongly that one should practice what they preach so he embarked on a new lifestyle of fitness beyond only running. Having been a ‘rail’, ‘bean-pole’ and ‘stick’ most of his life, Chad worked with a trainer for over a year, where he was able to gain 50 lbs. of muscle.

Achieving his own goals lead him to want to help others by pursuing a certification and career as a personal trainer and then manager for 24 Hour Fitness. It was here that Chad was introduced to CrossFit by one of his trainers. That was 7+ years ago, and he has not looked back.

Chad now shares his passion for fitness with the corporate employees of Albertsons-Safeway as their General Manager for their Fitness Centers in Pleasanton, Phoenix, and Boise…in addition to those @ Diablo. Michael has an extensive background in sports. It began when he was 6 years old playing pee-wee football. Michael continued with football through high school where he also got introduced to rugby and wrestling. Mike was first introduced to CrossFit in 2009. It wasn’t until 3 years later that he was able to fully commit to CrossFit and hasn’t looked back since. His passion grew even further when he learned about the competitive side of CrossFit in 2013 as he entered the world wide open. Michael then pursued CrossFit as a sport and fell even more in love with the community it fostered. He then began coaching in 2015 realizing that helping others grow mentally and physically became the most inspiring part to him. Now nothing makes Michael happier than helping others grow as individuals and representing his home affiliate community at local CrossFit competitions.

Lara was born in Namibia, and grew up in South Africa, Singapore, and San Francisco. She was a competitive swimmer until she moved to San Francisco, decided it was too cold to swim and became a cross-country runner. She moved to Los Angeles to get her bachelors in Psychology and Comparative Literature at UCLA. During this period, she realized that her ideas of health and fitness were distorted, so she also studied sports nutrition and the physiology of diet and exercise, and became a NSCA certified personal trainer.

She worked as a personal trainer and PT sales manager, but enjoyed working out with the firefighters and UCLA grad-students at the UCLA track. Before long she started following their workout regime – crossfit.com. Completely hooked, she became L1 trainer in 2010, and joined a CrossFit affiliate that December. By 2011 she started coaching at a CrossFit affiliate and started competing at local competitions. In 2012 she went to regionals in SoCal with a team, and in 2013 the team she went with made it to the games. That’s when she decided she needed a break, packed up and moved to Namibia. With no CrossFit around, she enjoyed long beach runs, and getting creative with throwing boulders and using rugby goal posts as a pull-up bar. During this period she taught English and chemistry to disadvantaged children, managed a small library a few hours a day, ran a few fitness bootcamp classes, and attempted to be a waitress at a German beer garden. Lara has a passion for learning and improving the holistic health of others, so she was excited to get accepted into a Masters in Public Health Program in South Africa. That’s when she packed up and moved again.

She competed at regionals as an individual in Africa in 2014, represented an African team in Denmark in 2015, and decided not to compete in 2016 in order to focus on her studies. After completing her coursework and most of her research, she decided to move back to the Bay Area and be closer to family. She is still doing research on the risks of pesticide exposure from cleaning and storing practices among herbicide sprayers in South Africa, works as a personal trainer and is excited to now be part of the Diablo Coaching Community and Competitive team.

Levi’s journey began in the small state of West Virginia where he was born and raised. Levi grew up playing a variety of sports and always enjoyed the challenges sports provided. Once getting into high school Levi made the decision to focus all of his efforts on football as his dream was to go as far as he could with it. After high school he went on to play football at Indiana University for some time. After spending time playing Big Ten football he decided that he was ready to start a new chapter in his life as what was once his dream was no longer his passion. He vividly remembers his first exposure to CrossFit as it occurred coming home from college on a particular weekend. Levi recalls he came home from lunch on a Sunday afternoon just before having to head back to school. He sat down to watch TV for a few minutes and this thing called the “CrossFit Games” were on ESPN. After what was suppose to be just a few minutes turned into a couple hours of fascination watching all of the episodes. It was at that moment when Levi’s new passion was ignited. After finishing the school year he came home for the summer and tried CrossFit for the first time that very next week. It only took one workout for Levi to realize that this was his new path and the rest was history. Levi saw CrossFit as a way to express his passion for health, fitness, and wellness and help others in their journey of achieving optimal health. Levi loves the community that CrossFit has created and how it brings out the best in everyone regardless of where they are in their health journey.

Joby was born in New York, spent most of her summers in the Dominican Republic (as all kids of Dominican families do) and at 16 moved to SoCal. As a child and through high school she dabbled in many sports such as indoor soccer, swimming, gymnastics, softball, and cross country running. While going to college and working as a Medical Assistant there was no time for sports and decided to take up dance. The awareness of her love of body movement led her to leave her studies of Chinese Medicine and start a career as a Latin Dancer. She ran one of the most successful Salsa dance companies for 10 years and is a pioneers in what is known as  “L.As Style Salsa”. Joby’s career gave her the opportunity to travel to more than 45 countries, all over the U.S. and as an accomplished choreographer/dancer to the stars in Hollywood.

In 2004, she decided to make a shift to focus less on her career and more on her husband and daughter. Feeling the rut of 20 years of dance she discovered her passion for the gym and started her fitness journey. She began with a few years of training under a body builder, went to circuit training and kickboxing and ended up as a Zumba/dance fitness instructor to kids and adults for 3 years. As her husband was a Marine this moved them from SoCal to Georgia and then to Florida where as a family they found CrossFit. CrossFit has been the pinnacle point in fueling her fire to the rest of her life. As Joby enjoys pushing her boundaries she took up CrossFit competitively as a hobby and uses her gains in her adventures that range anywhere from running a Spartan race to hiking the Machu Picchu trail in Peru.
When moving to NorCal she joined the administrative team at Diablo by working the front desk. Joby proudly shares the story to all those who are considering joining Diablo CrossFit. “When I first moved here, I visited 6 different Crossfit gyms before deciding on one. Diablo intimidated the heck out of me, even after 4 years of experience but you know what sold me? The Coaches! They care about your progress and what you as an individual need help with.” Even on their off time, if they walk by and see you need help. They will not hesitate to step in. That to me is priceless.”

While working on her goal to make it to the Master Qualifier now at 50 Joby feels it’s never to late to pursue your passions especially when you have such a support system such as the Diablo Community. “If you want to be great, surround yourself with greatness!”
