Last week was chaos with back-to-back events celebrating the start of the Open and Diablo’s 20th year as a CrossFit affiliate. But in the midst of it all, we were able to take a moment and recognize our member, Kathy Simons, who has amassed 4070 visits to Diablo CrossFit in 17 years. She’s usually in class at 8AM.

OH WHAT A NIGHT…
Thursday, February 26th is a day I don’t think any of us will forget.
A huge crew from Diablo made the trip down to Moffett Field for the live announcement of the first workout of the CrossFit Open — and the experience was next level from the moment we arrived.
Sitting on the tarmac was a massive C-130 and a Black Hawk helicopter from the Air National Guard. Before a single rep of the Open was completed, our members were already climbing through aircraft, taking photos, and soaking in an atmosphere that felt bigger than sport. It was one of those moments where you look around and realize: this community gets access to extraordinary experiences because we show up together.
Once the audience was all seated, a video story was played on very big screen overhead – and broadcast to the world on YouTube: “20 Years of Changing Lives: Diablo CrossFit“. It was surreal to hear our story being told to 200 people at once, and broadcast to 1 million more on the livestream for 26.1.
Then came the workout announcement.
Four CrossFit Games athletes took the floor to throw down the first test of 2026 — intensity up close, effort on full display. And in the middle of it all, I was invited onto the competition floor to speak about what the Open means to Diablo CrossFit. Representing this community in that setting, in front of the world, was something I will carry with me for a long time.
But the day wasn’t finished.
We returned home and transformed Diablo CrossFit into something completely different. That evening, we hosted the world premiere of the CrossFit documentary Fittest On Earth: 2025. Our gym became a movie theater and lounge — full screen, catered dinner, packed house, and athlete interviews afterward. Even better: two Diablo members arranged for 6 incredible super cars to be parked out front to welcome our guests – Brandon Rosselli, brought a rare, Acura NSX, a Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato and a Porsche 911GT3. Brad Barnett, COO of Price Dealerships, brought an incredible Bentley Continental, a McClaren 720s and a Porsche Panamera!
It struck me how rare this is. In a single day we stood on an airfield with military aircraft, watched the fittest athletes on Earth compete from a few feet away, represented our gym on a global stage, and then came home to celebrate our sport together under our own roof.
The Open is about workouts, yes. But more than that, it’s about shared experience. It’s about belonging to something bigger – that is having an incredibly positive impact on the world.
And, Diablo is leading the way.
