NOBODY’S WATCHING YOU – I received a lot of positive feedback about my article last week which was prompted by an email from a member who was discouraged by some of our daily workouts. I wrote about the challenge of coming in to workout when the workout appears to be beyond your capabilities or capacity (CrossFit is Hard) and why COMING IN is so important. Now I’d like to address another very common fear that many new members have when they come to Diablo: embarrassment.

Every new member that joins Diablo is required to do a “No Sweat Intro” – a tour and an introduction to our services. We don’t sell. In fact, we don’t have a script for our front desk team. Instead, Yvonne and I tell our team: “show them the entire gym, tell them how we do things, how our Start-Ups work, ask about their interest and experience, and.. share your passion for CrossFit.” We’re casual, friendly, and very low key. However, when we do a tour when the gym is busy and class is in-session, we know that the prospect is likely going to be intimidated. And, almost on cue, we see their expressions change and bodies stiffen when they walk out of the lobby, onto the turf and into the main gym – especially if barbells are involved. Every single member on the floor knows what they’re doing and they’re doing it with authority! The music is loud and the energy high. For the non-experienced CrossFitter, the thoughts going through their head likely include:

  • “All of these people are fit af!”
  • “There’s no way I’m going to be able to do this.”
  • “This looks dangerous.”
  • “Everyone knows what they are doing!”

As soon as the Start-Up private sessions with one of our Coaches begin, most fears of CrossFit subside. New members learn the movements and the terminology and how to scale. They experience the intensity and the satisfaction of a completed workout. Confidence grows. However, when the Start-up sessions end, the first group class awaits – and internal fears of embarrassment return: “I’m not as good as everyone else in class” and “everyone will be watching me”.

Now it’s time for a hard truth: nobody is watching you. Well, that’s not entirely true – our Coach is watching you – making sure you are moving properly and that you have scaled appropriately for the desired stimulus. Everyone else is focused on the workout at hand. Some may look your way, but they are not watching you. Instead, their minds are racing with a myriad thoughts about the workout they’re about to do:

  • “Should I try to go unbroken?”
  • “Maybe I should scale the weight today”
  • “I wonder if I can beat my last time”
  • “I think I can PR today”
  • “Ugh, not feeling it, I’m gonna just take it easy”
  • “This is NOT gonna feel good”
  • “I am so gonna crush this”
  • “Ok, break this up in sets of 5, or.. maybe 3s”
  • “Fast singles .. that’s the ticket”
  • “Please Lord, let my double-unders be here today.”

The beauty of CrossFit is that it is hard. And doing hard things clears the mind and improves our focus. When we’re deep into a CrossFit workout, we’re ONLY thinking about finishing the workout – nothing else around us matters. And, when its over, the brain fog clears and we’re relieved to be done. And, we’re stoked to fist-bump everyone else around us who joined us on the short, but challenging journey – no matter how they scaled or substituted.

So, remember, nobody’s watching. Leave your ego at the door. Give it your all. And, be sure to fist bump the new guy/girl in the corner when you see them at the end. #itsup2us

A BIT ABOUT DIABLO – The Tom Jones Award –  This is the only award that we give at Diablo CrossFit. We display the Tom Jones Award plaque in our lobby. It was created in 2011 to honor our longtime member, Tom Jones (still a member!) who showed up to EVERY event and competition eager to help set up, work the event, bbq and clean up. In the inaugural year of the TJA, Tom Jones drove to Tahoe for a Tough Mudder event to watch and cheer on our members. He scaled to the top of the mountain and back down throughout the day, taking pictures along the way and cheering people on. To this day, Tom still greets every new member and prospective member with genuine kindness and always extolls the virtues of Diablo CrossFit and our community.

Every year, several TJA alumni and Diablo staff members vote for the current year, Tom Jones Award winner. It is NOT an easy decision among the several candidates. Employees may be included in the nominations, but they have to really go above and beyond to earn an engraved label on the award.

So, who’s it gonna be for 2024?  Come to the Holiday Party where we’ll be making the announcement.

Oh, and be sure to say “hello” to Tom Jones the next time you see him!

December Focus: 1. Deadlift 2. Thruster 3. Skill: Handstand Pushups
 – Calendar; – Newsletter

My Fav Workout Last Week: “Helen” – (also, most hated workout last week) is a classic CrossFit benchmark. ALL experienced CrossFitters know this pain. This is an all-out sprint for 10-12 minutes for me. You can’t slack on Helen – you have to suffer, especially on the runs:

“Helen”:  3 Rounds for time: 400m Run, 21 KB swings (#35/53), 12 Pull ups

CRAIG’S LIST:
  • YouTube / RESEARCH:  The Science of Protein and Its Role in Longevity – WATCH! – Dr. Rhonda Patrick   This is only 40mins and really changed my perspective and knowledge about the importance of protein and aging AND the recommended daily dosages!
  • ARTICLE/ RESEARCH:  “Ultraprocessed Foods High in Seed Oils Could Be Fueling Colon Cancer”  Scientific American  “Colorectal cancer tumor samples from 81 people in the U.S. had excessive amounts of inflammation-boosting lipids, called omega-6 fatty acids—and lacked helpful lipids called omega-3 fatty acids, which help stop inflammation.” NOTE: this was a small study and it points to a correlation, not causation. At the end of the day, reducing exposure to foods cooked (fried) in seed oils and reducing intake of ultra-processed foods will likely improve health.

Yvonne’s List:

Tim’s List (CF Palo Alto):
  • Book: Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and The Surprising Science of Real ToughnessFrom Tim: “Steve Magness, a performance scientist who coaches Olympic athletes, rebuilds our broken model of resilience with one grounded in the latest science and psychology. In Do Hard Things, Magness teaches us how we can work with our body – how experiencing discomfort, leaning in, paying attention, and creating space to take thoughtful action can be the true indications of cultivating inner strength.”

Make it an awesome week!
