JUST DON’T F*CK IT UP

On Thursday, CFHQ announced that Eric Roza was stepping down from his role as CEO. He’ll be moving to a position on the board of directors.  The official communication was classic corporate speak in my opinion – complimenting Eric’s accomplishments and painting the move as a promotion of sorts. Meh.

Here are my thoughts and opinions based on several conversations with friends in the organization: Eric and the Board mutually agreed to have him move out of the CEO role. Stress, family, & mental health issues contributed to the decision. Additionally, the Dave Castro termination created incredible turmoil within the community and the management team at CrossFit. And, according to some, the new management team at CF is in conflict with the legacy team.

So, how does the departure of Roza as CEO affect everything? It doesn’t.

Diablo Thrives.

We’re a 16 year-old affiliate with an established reputation and brand and supportive community that helps us thrive in all market conditions. Diablo will be fine. However, I’m keenly interested in who is running the show at CFHQ and what their plan is for the future.

CrossFit Still Works.

CrossFit is an amazing fitness methodology that is proven: constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity. The workouts are hard and, more importantly, they are measurable and repeatable. Thus, performance improvements (fitness!) are easily discernible: if you finished sooner, or completed more reps, then your fitness improved. This is a unique and distinguishing characteristic of CrossFit. And, it allows for competition, ie, the CrossFit Games.

Coaches & Affiliates Save Lives.

The CF methodology was so simple and so incredibly effective that it spread rapidly around the world, first to Military, Police, Fire & First Responders, then to fitness enthusiasts. CF began certifying trainers and allowing  qualified trainers to open affiliates. What followed next was an amazing phenomenon in the fitness industry: the explosive growth of CrossFit affiliate communities: – incredibly passionate members whose lives & health were changed by CrossFit coming together to share their workouts and experiences in their box and online. The “community” of fitness kept members coming  back and attracted more people to join. It still does.

Don’t F*ck It Up

So what do affiliates want from CFHQ? It’s very simple: we want CrossFit to protect and promote the brand and the methodology. Share the amazing, life-changing, stories from affiliate communities. Stop trying to please everybody. Trust the methodology, your L1 flow-masters, your affiliates and most of all the community. We all know what to do.

To put it bluntly, don’t fuck it up. We’ll take care of the rest.

NO VAX CHECKS IN CCC!  In other news.. the County has dropped the mandate requiring gyms & restaurants to check for vaccinations. As the number of cases, hospitalizations and  deaths continue to decline, the County lifted this burdensome policy. I’m very hopeful we’re almost out of this pandemic life – mask mandates are to be lifted Feb 15. Fortunately, despite an early warning from the District Attorney, the County decided not to enforce the vax check & mask mandates for Diablo. And I’m grateful. We have been an island of normalcy in a sea of Covid chaos.

CRAIG’S LIST (Stuff I’m Reading, Hearing, Watching, Using or Buying)

National Geographic: The Rescue (Nat Geo on Disney+) – WOW! 5AM’r Katie Terher recommended this one and it was amazing. This documentary chronicles the against-all-odds story that transfixed the world in 2018: the daring rescue of twelve boys and their coach from deep inside a flooded cave in Northern Thailand. I knew this was a harrowing rescue, but I had no idea how incredibly dangerous it was – how unbelievably far the rescuers had to go, and how many people were involved & necessary to make it happen, including the Thai Navy Seals, Air Force Special Forces, and expert cave divers from around the world. You’ll be in tears and in awe at the end.

The Tinder Swindler. (NetFlix) – On the other end of the documentary spectrum, is a story about Simon Leviev, a convicted con artist who swindled nearly $10million from women via the Tinder app. This is a modern day “Catch Me If You Can” story that is really hard to believe, yet true. And while you may be tempted to blame the victims for their naivete, you’ll be blown away by the depths to which Simon Leviev went to create his cons.

Make it an awesome week!
