PLASTICS WTF? There’s been quite a bit of news lately regarding recent research that has shown that microplastics are present in nearly every part of the human body, including the brain, heart and liver – raising obvious concerns about health impacts. Rhonda Patrick dedicated an entire podcast to plastics and it is frightening. The average human consumes the equivalent of 1 credit card a week in plastic! Check out the link in “Craigslist” below.

A few months back, Yvonne began to remove all plastic items from our house that have contact with food including cooking utensils and storage containers. At the time I thought it was remarkable how much plastic we used for food prep and storage. But, as I’ve come to learn, I really had no idea how big the “plastic problem” is. It will take years to reverse

Last Thursday, my daughter invited me along to a tour of two wholesale plant nurseries in Half Moon Bay. The tour was part of her college horticulture studies – and the focus was plant propagation automation. Both facilities employed an incredible amount of automation machinery to support seeding, watering, fertilization, harvesting and packing.

The 2nd facility was an Amazon test facility – a massive green house production with almost 100% robot automation. Their only crop is lettuce at the moment in order to prove the concept. The tour leader bragged about the quality of the organic lettuce, the consistency of the crop and lack of pesticides because of the controlled environment. The facility and operations were impressive. And, it was almost all entirely made of plastic: the trays that supported the seedlings, the pipes that carried the water and fertilizers, the robotic claws that handled the plants and finally, the consumer packaging for the final product are ALL plastic. It was a bit disheartening.

Plastic has been an incredible super material for humanity allowing for rapid production of billions of useful tools, devices, parts, storage materials, and even clothing items. Unfortunately, we’ve overlooked or ignored the potential harmful effects of plastics, especially micro-particles that have made their way into our food, water and air supplies. It will take many years to reverse the impact, but hopefully, recognition of the problem can kickstart the process.

If you’re interested in avoiding micro-plastic ingestion, start with the Rhonda Patrick podcast below and then, remove items in your kitchen that make contact with food and beverages. That’ll likely take care of the majority of your exposure.

FALL CLASSIC WOW!  Our Fall Classic was a blast! 35 athletes from around the Bay Area competed. At least 5 athletes qualified for the USAW American Open – including a few from Diablo (Gary Alinea, M50-54 81kg and Carrie Pon, Open Women 81kg). Check out our Fall Classic pics

A BIT ABOUT DIABLO…  Diablo In-N-Out?

Most of our new members probably wonder about the Diablo In-N-Out logo occasionally seen on t’s & tanks in the gym. Is it because CrossFitters love the paleo-friendly version of the classic Double-Double (lettuce wrap)? Or maybe, the logo commemorates the “Diablo In-N-Out” Helen workout – one DD at the start of each round of Helen (3 Double-Doubles!).

Actually, I created the Diablo In-N-Out version of our logo in 2021 when Contra Costa County mandated that restaurants, gyms and other select businesses require customers to show an updated COVID vaccine card. Diablo refused to discriminate against those who chose not to vaccinate. And, our gym provided ample air flow and social distancing to keep our members safe.

In-N-Out also refused to check vaccine cards – and it made national news. Their press release statement was bold and to the point:

“We refuse to become the vaccination police for any government. We fiercely disagree with any government dictate that forces a private company to discriminate
against customers who choose to patronize their business.”

So, in support of In-N-Out’s public position, we created the Diablo In-N-Out logo for t’s and tanks. They were a big hit in our community and beyond.

CRAIG’S LIST:

MUST WATCH: **SOCIAL MEDIA POST OF THE WEEK**: Check out the incredible work that @skate_anima is doing to help severely disabled children experience the exhilaration of skateboarding. Caution: tears.

HBO: The PenguinNot sure if I mentioned this one yet. This is the pre-story of the Penguin from DC Comics Batman series. There is no Batman in it. It’s a modern-day, reality version of the story of the rise of the Penguin in Gotham. The casting is brilliant. Colin Farrell is unrecognizable as the Penguin and he plays it brilliantly – kind of a gritty Tony Soprano.

YT: Joe Rogan with Donald Trump. This is not an ad. And, don’t assume my politics or how I plan to vote. I enjoy Joe Rogan because his curiosity of topics and people make for great podcast content. Unfortunately, mainstream media is all about 1-liners, “gotcha” outtakes and ridiculous personal attacks. This interview, on the other hand, was candid, unscripted, funny and light (though, Trump couldn’t resist some personal attacks.. ugh). And, I did feel like I got to know Trump better. I wish that Kamala would do it too – Rogan has asked.  With 30m+ views(!), I think it’s significant enough for all of us to watch.

YT: What Microplastics Are Doing to the Brain, Body, and Reproductive Systems. Found My Fitness with Rhonda Patrick PhD. Every week we consume the equivalent of 1 credit card of plastic. Plastics may be affecting our metabolic system, our reproductive system, and our endocrine system.

Make it an awesome week!
