A BIT ABOUT DIABLO: “THE SHED” – The only workout designed after a logo – circa 2008. On Friday last week, the workout of the day was a Diablo CrossFit benchmark called “The Shed”. The workout is for time:

  • 2/3 Rope Climbs
  • 600m Row
  • 30 Overhead Squats (#53/95)
  • 600m Run
  • 30′ / 30′ Walking Overhead Lunges – ea. arm (#25/35)
  • 16 Handstand Push Ups
  • 30 Box Jumps
  • 60 KB Swings (#25/35)

Now, examine our first outdoor sign for Diablo CrossFit above. The devil stick figures represent each of the movements in “The Shed” workout with a slight modification for Ring Handstand Push Ups. The KB swing is not show, but the after-effect is (puking in a bucket with the kettlebell close by). OG partner Jeremy Jones designed the logo – which was also one of our first T-Shirts.

“The Shed” was the nickname for our 1st indoor location at 2040 North Main St. in Walnut Creek – a 1000sf mechanics shed with a roll-up garage door. We moved out of the Shed in January 2009 to our current location in Pleasant Hill.

Research: Walking Cures Depression– Minimal effective dose of walking to treat depression = 90 minutes
per week. Most effective dose of walking to treat depression = 4 hours per week. Here’s my experience: I walk 1-1.5 hrs every morning and another 15min at night. I always – always – feel great during and immediately after. Of course, exercise does the same.

NetFlix – Hillbilly Elegy: I’ve been meaning to read the book after it was referred to me by a friend. Then, it popped up in my recommended list on NetFlix and Yvonne and I watched. It’s an amazing story of overcoming an incredibly rough upbringing in rural Kentucky to graduate from Yale Law School and become a State Senator.  The story is based on the memoirs of JD Vance. Glen Close and Amy Adams had very powerful performances. 

YouTube – CF Games: Dave Castro’s Games Athlete Introductions – Only a few more to go! I’ve listened to about 25 of these (55 more to go!). This is one of the coolest ideas for promoting the CrossFit Games ever. Each interview is about 10mins long (8mins on 1.25 speed!).
