Yes to Teams. 25.1 Open Announcement! Open 2011. Build Strength. Aromatherapy. Yogurt & USAID – TWA 2.17.25

The Bros have a LOT of work to do. #notfair

“Approach the game with no preset agendas and you’ll probably come away surprised at your overall efforts.”
Phil Jackson

NEVERMIND WHAT I SAID…  Ok, so our plan was to NOT do an “intramural Open” this year. Instead, we planned to host Friday Night Lights with only a costume theme each week. “Themes NOT Teams” I said. Well, at our weekly Coaches meeting on Wednesday, Coach Jackson reminded all of us that our Diablo community really enjoys competition – and perhaps we should consider a full-blown intramural Open again. Then, Kim noted that our Open registrations were almost 50% men/women – which represented an easy way to set up teams. I needed evidence, so I talked with a couple of other affiliate owners who validated the idea: they held similar competitions in the past and it was a blast.  Thus: DiaBros vs. SheDevils was conceived!

So far, 40 women and 44 men have registered. We’ll release scoring rules and opportunities later this week. For sure we’ll include all divisions, Open, Masters, Scaled, Scaled Masters and Foundations. Judging and attendance at Friday Night lights or Sunday Funday will be in the mix as well. And… we’ll have weekly themes.

Our community is already on board – planning strategies for team success and Friday night fun. Be sure and sign up – ’cause we do know how to have a damn good time in the Open.

NEW IN 2025: DIABLO OPEN ANNOUNCEMENTS – THURSDAY EVENINGS!  The CrossFit Games has some awesome Open Announcements planned with CrossFit Games athletes participating & doing the workouts as soon as they are announced. Diablo will also be announcing the workouts to our community a few hours after CrossFit – in similar fashion. We’ll have two Open category athletes and two Scaled athletes do the workouts live and we’ll broadcast to our community via our Facebook member group. Each competition will feature two DiaBros and two She Devils going head-to-head (Open & Scaled).

Come watch the fun at Diablo on THURSDAY night or, catch it live on Facebook (time TBA)! First up: Coach Jackson will go head-to-head with member & badass Master’s athlete, Kendra Watters in the Open Division and Jason Pederson will match up against Marisa Manson in the Scaled category!

FRIDAY EVE OR SUNDAY MORNING?  Our big OPEN event will be on Friday “Night” beginning at 4PM on Fridays (starting Feb 28th).  But, if you can’t make Friday nights, then come on Sundays at 10AM for “Sunday Funday”! We’ll have heats until 12:30ish. Or, if you want to RE-DO the workout, Sunday Funday will be a great time to do it!

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT DIABLO...  We’re in the OPEN! The CrossFit Games Open was introduced to the CrossFit community in 2011 as a way to include the massive number of people who wanted to participate in the competition process to get to the CrossFit Games. In ’07 & ’08, there was only “The Games” – an first come, first serve, competition at the Castro family ranch in Aromas, CA. In ’09, Regional Qualifying Competitions were introduced to handle the demand for participants. In 2010, “Sectionals” were introduced. Sectionals were qualifiers for the Regionals, which led to the Games. Finally, in 2011, the first Open online competition was introduced: a 6 week qualifying event that lead to Regionals and then to the Games. It was a massive success! So many people registered and tried to submit scores for the 1st workout that the CrossFit Games website crashed. So, the CrossFit Games delayed the submissions for 1 week – essentially allowing everyone to re-do the workout. 6 weeks became 7. And it was an absolute blast!

In 2011, Diablo qualified a Team for the CrossFit Games (7th Place), and 1 Master (yours truly). In all, we’ve had 6 Team appearances at the Games, 16 Individual and 15 Masters qualifications. The sport of CrossFit is in our blood.

CRAIG’S LIST:

  • Podcast: YT – Huberman with Pavel: Build Strength – This is a LONG and very in depth discussion with one of the world’s best strength & conditioning coaches, Pavel Tsatsouline. Pavil has also been a significant influence in the CrossFit world. Strength has become a leading indicator of longevity – and Pavil breaks down the most efficient was to build strength, endurance & flexibility. You’ll recognize much of the language and techniques used at Diablo.
  • Research: 226% Boost In Cognitive Performance With Aromatherapy During Sleep (for 60-85yos) – what? Found this one hard to believe. But the research looked legit. But.. the results came from 2 hours of aromatherapy every night for 6 months! Not sure how to replicate at home, but I’ve never been an aromatherapy person. Cue the MLMs.
  • Article: Lower Colorectal Cancer Risk with Yogurt for Breakfast – It’s all down to something called “Bifidobacterium” — but you have to be eating the right amount of yogurt for it to do the trick.
  • Podcast: Joe Rogan with Mike Benz. Mike Benz is a former official with the US Dept of State. Mike Benz details how USAID spending has been utilized by ALL administrations over the last 60+ years. Mike is an excellent presenter and provides some fascinating and shocking stories. This is important information for all Americans, in my opinion. While much of the spending appears incredibly absurd, it is easy to understand HOW the spending happened and why (by BOTH parties) – often in the interest of expanding America’s global influence.

Make it an awesome week!
