SO MUCH GOOD AT DIABLO – As usual, CrossFit affiliate communities are an incredible source of positivity and motivation – a refreshing reminder of the power of CrossFit. On the other hand, as many of us have noticed, there is a lot of vitriol in the comments on CrossFit Games related social medial posts in response to the death of Lazar Ducik. His death has had a profound impact on many people in the community, especially the athletes. Stages of grief include denial, sadness anger, and eventually acceptance. Many people are angry – and some have a right to be. However, many of the harsh accusations, personal attacks and demands for action in the comments are irrational and just plain mean.#dontreadthecomments My mood was somber upon returning home from the Games. However, I was reminded of the amazing power of CrossFit when I walked in the gym last week. In the parking lot I was greeted by our 82year old married couple who do CrossFit as part of their fitness regimen. They praised their coach and admitted that they drive past the “very nice” fitness facility at their retirement community on their way in to Diablo! They’re amazing. I was smiling all morning. On Friday, when I walked into the main gym area, I was greeted by our scholarship athlete from our County Youth Probation program who gave me a bottle of honey from the work release training program that is teaching bee-keeping skills (its outstanding, btw!). Later, I spotted him in the main gym working with Coach Chad when he strung together multiple ring muscle ups after just learning them. He and his coach were both ecstatic! It was a memorable moment for everyone. CrossFit remains a life-enhancing methodology that fosters incredible communities with enduring bonds based on hard effort, mutual support and lots of love. And CrossFit Affiliates are the best place to share the experience. A BIT ABOUT DIABLO..THE DIABLOTRON As I assembled another pull up structure for Diablo this weekend, I was reminded of our first “real” pull up rig: “The Diablotron”. The Diablotron is still in use every day and remains a favorite for pull-ups, bar muscle ups, and ring muscle ups. It was custom built in December, 2008 for our new Pleasant Hill location. Prior to 2009, we relied upon plumbing pipes and fixtures for our pull ups – not an ideal usage, especially for kipping! The Diablotron was designed by Diablo owner/partner/head coach, Jeremy Jones, a mechanical engineer. Jeremy’s design was intended to provide maximum pull-up bar space, with variable heights and with the smallest footprint possible on the gym floor, without consuming valuable wall space. Frankly, it is a brilliant design. You can do pull-ups or muscle ups on it, drop and run directly under it out the door – a very cool feeling. The Diablotron only has 4 posts posts and almost 80′ of pull up space! It has cross-bars at the top which allows for 4 set of muscle up rings with plenty of swing clearance. The rig was so large that it was assembled in place by a welder. It sits in contrast to our newest pull up rig which follows the modern, conventional design: pull up bars plus squat racks – functional, but not nearly as beautiful. Fun fact: several CrossFit affiliates built Diablotrons in their gyms when Jeremy published the design online for free – that’s CrossFit. Thanks JJ. |
