THE OTHER 95%

Today at Diablo, I found myself thinking about how little we actually see of our members’ lives outside of the gym. For a few hours each week, we see the part where they do CrossFit. Meanwhile, the other 95% of their waking hours are spent building careers, running businesses, caring for families, pursuing passions, navigating challenges, enjoying friendships and even participating in other sports and fitness programs. (It’s one of the things I LOVE about our podcast: I get to learn and share “the rest of the story” of our members)

Our members are business owners, teachers, first responders, investment managers, healthcare professionals, tradesmen, parents, artists, students, athletes and so much more. Every person who walks through our doors carries an entire life with them, including the not-talked-about physical and emotional burdens of a busy life. But for a few hours a week, all of that gets set aside. Titles, responsibilities, accomplishments and outside pressures don’t matter much when the clock starts. We’re simply people doing hard things together: sharing equipment, encouraging one another and trying to become a little better than we were yesterday.

That is definitely one of the most powerful things about CrossFit: it brings remarkably different people together, puts us all on common ground and reminds us that, despite our different lives, we have far more in common than we realize.

So, after your next workout, say hello to someone you don’t really know yet and ask them: “what do you do with the other 95%?” I bet you get a really cool story.

OG Of The Week – Jorgy

Top Left: Jorgy & son today!
Top Right: Coach Jorgy at the ’08 Games final event: Squat Clean Heavy Grace.
Bottom: Jorgy and his good friend, Rick, in one of their 1st workouts at Diablo: scaled Fran.

Josh “Jorgy” Jorgensen dropped by Diablo today (with his wife and young son!!)!  Jorgy is officially Diablo CrossFit’s FIRST hired Coach (a trade for membership). Jorgy was 18 years old when he and his friend, Rick, came to Diablo in 2007 after graduating from De La Salle high school. They brought an energy and passion for CrossFit that helped carry us through some challenging times. After getting his Level 1 Certification, Jorgy started coaching classes for us – spending MANY long hours at the gym, coaching and training. He loved coaching and the sport, competing at the CrossFit Games in 2008 (Indy!) and 2009 on Diablo’s team. Jorgy coached for us for almost 10 years until he enlisted in the Army.

More than anything, he made CrossFit fun and a little crazy: he invented “Bouncing Grace” (bounce 135 back to the shoulders from overhead) and eagerly joined in on the first ever: “In N Out Helen” (Consume 1 Double Double after each round – click for video!)
He’s now an Army Officer and deployed in Dublin. We’ll hopefully see him from time-to-time for workouts when he has time.

CROSSFIT EDU: “CVFMHI”

CrossFit defines Fitness as: increased work capacity (the ability to do more) across broad time & modal domains (short & long distances, heavy, light or no loads).

CrossFIt is: “Constantly varied, functional movements, executed with high intensity.” And, the workouts fall into three categories, mixed differently every day: monostructural (running, rowing, bikiing, etc), weightlifting, and gymanstics. Every workout pulls from one, two, or all three of those categories, and that is where the variety lives.
