RANDOM LOBBY CONVERSATIONS

Most People Don’t Know Shit About Fitness (sadly) – primarily because the industry, influencers, Government, schools and corporate interests have made fitness far more confusing and daunting than it really is. Most people do not understand that even a few minutes of exercise every day can have a positive impact on health.

PE Should Be A Priority – The Mt. Diablo School District cut PE due to budget issues, so the PTA hired an outside contractor to keep it in place. Our Country spent $5.3 Trillion on healthcare in 2024. The majority of that spending went to treat chronic diseases, mostly preventable via exercise and diet. What if PE was a HIGH priority for ALL grades (30min, 2x a day)?? I bet academic results would improve along with health markers.

At That Moment He Realized: “I Couldn’t Do This Without CrossFit” – Member Mike Manson told me about a recent “CrossFit epiphany” he had while working in the crawl space under a house. He’s repairing a foundation – with cement – but only able to access the site via the 12″ crawl space under the house (a 50′ crawl).  To make the repairs, he has to push and drag the bags of cement while prone under the house. While taking a brief rest he realized that his CrossFit workouts were the reason he was able to confidently do that job. Side note: Mike is a fng stud.. you could NOT get me into a tight crawl space under a house to do cement repair on a foundation.

You Can’t Sell “Community”:  When people walk through our doors, we love to tell them about our awesome “community”. Almost always, they nod and smile..but don’t really grasp what we mean. It’s not something people eagerly seek when joining a gym – nor do they understand what “community” really means in a fitness sense. But, talk to them a few months after CrossFitting, and they’ll rave about “the awesome community.” Go figure.

Undeniable: People judge appearance first, composure next. A good fitness regimen benefits both.

NAME ‘EM!

The polls have closed! For the foreseeable future, we’ll be naming our metcons: mostly for memory purposes (it’s easier to recall a workout with a good name) and partly for the humor & mystery.

And, let’s face it – everybody hates burpees.

OG Of The Week – Chris Zuppan

Chris Zuppan (pic above in 2026) joined Diablo in 2011 and immediately fell in love with CrossFit. He loved the local competition scene – competing along side some of the best in the Bay Area – while holding down as full-time job as an apprentice elevator engineer. Along the way, he married and became a father – and took a hiatus from CrossFit when work & family got crazy. Now he’s a regular in class again and.. a father of 3 and a Journeyman Elevator Mechanic & Foreman – supervising some of the biggest jobs in the City.

You’ll see Chris in the late afternoons, probably leading the way for the rest of us.

CRAIG’S LIST: Stuff I’m Watching, Reading, Using or Listening to:

New Building Update / Saga – Much of my spare time has been spent on the acquisition of a building for Diablo CrossFit just 500m away from our current location. It’s a Concord address, but governed by Contra Costa County (unincorporated County property). We’re in escrow, but we have some hurdles to get it over the goal line:

  • Conditional Use Permit: despite the fact that the building was home to a gymnastics gym for 20+ years, it turns out that “Fitness” requires a Conditional Use Permit. We’ve filed our application with the County, but the process takes 4-6 months. We’re hoping for Jan/Feb approval
  • Renovations: the building is currently an empty shell being used for storage by the current owner. It will require substantial work before we can occupy, including an interior buildout along with a comprehensive parking lot redesign & renovation. Plans are almost completed done (they’re amazing). Timeline: 8-12 months.
  • Subtenants: it is likely that we’ll have one or two subtenants whose service / business is complimentary to what we do.
  • $$: This is the scary part. We’ve got financing locked up, but once the Conditional Use Permit is in place, sh*t gets real – the deal closes and we own it. We need to get in quickly to avoid paying rent, contractors & a building loan all at the same time for too long.
  • Move Date estimate: end of 2027 or beginning of 2028.
