Kim Hilen

MANAGER & PITBOSS

Kim was first introduced to Diablo CrossFit in 2010 by a friend who was an affiliate owner. Kim and her husband were globogym-goers for 20 years prior. In addition, she had just turned 40 and was a bit heavier after having two kids. She was looking for a change.

At the time, Diablo was offered a free class – so Kim and her decided to try it.  She figured since she was in pretty good shape, it would be a piece of cake: “how hard could an 8-minute workout be that consisted of running and pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups and air squats?”  Well, Kim says, “it was so hard as well as ego and soul crushing, that I decided I would not come back until I could do an unassisted pull-up.”  So she went back to her globo gym and worked on pull-ups for a year.  Once she was able to do a pull-up, she decided she was mentally and physically ready for Crossfit.

After being a member at Diablo for almost 14 years, Kim says her only regret is that she didn’t join sooner. She tells everyone that CrossFit has changed her life for the better.

As a child and into her teenage years, Kim tried various sports but never found a sport that she thoroughly enjoyed.  During college, she started running and then after finding my first job, she joined a globo gym. She was a fan of step classes and it was ideal at that time in my life. Once she married and had kids, she didn’t have a lot of time to go to the gym. After 20 years of going to  classes and trying to make up her own workouts, she was getting bored which led to less motivation. She  needed a new, challenging workout that could be done in an hour.

Like most young women in their teenage years and early 20’s, Kim also had some body image issues. Even though she was never considered overweight, she was never comfortable in her own skin. However, after a year of doing Crossfit consistently and making better food choices, she noticed a change in her body composition – at 42 years old!

Kim’s relationship with food was never healthy.  She turned to food as an emotional crutch and would eat unhealthy foods during stressful and unhappy moments.  After starting CrossFit, she made better food choices to fuel her body and felt much better during workouts.

Kim says “CrossFit is not easy.” She was never considered athletic. Most of the gymnastic skills and olympic lifts were a slow learning process for her and at times very frustrating. But doing these hard things has made her a stronger and more confident person.  She now carries more confidence outside of the gym which has completely changed her life and made her a better mother, spouse, sister and friend.

Stop by the front desk when Kim is there and ask her about amazing success story. You’ll be impressed by the power of CrossFit.
