DIABLO’S ANNUAL-ISH GOLF OUTING
11 of Diablo’s Wannabe Golfers got together on Friday at the prestigious Diablo National Golf Course – a 9 hole wonder right off of Ygnacio Valley Road. We played a best-ball team scramble and likely shattered several course records including: most lost balls, most laughs, coolest golf hat (Coach Corey) and, for the first time ever: most deadly shot (Mel hit a squirrel on his drive off on hole 7).
Congratulations to the Team of Yvonne, Carolina and Jordan who’s Team Score was 4 under par!! (they’re ringers)

A HUMBLING REMINDER

The images coming out of Nepal this week are almost impossible to comprehend: catastrophic flash floods and landslides swept away entire villages, buildings, cars and bridges. Multiple hundreds of people have been confirmed dead and thousands are still missing. I am especially heartbroken by the children and families who were caught completely unaware. One moment, they were simply living their lives going about daily activities. The next, everything changed.

I don’t want to turn someone else’s suffering and loss into a life lesson. But, a tragedy of this magnitude forces us to confront how fragile and unpredictable life can be. I was 26 years old when the Loma Prieta Earthquake struck the Bay Area. Many people were seriously injured and 63 lost their lives. I remember reading the stories of people narrowly avoiding death and the many heroic rescues of people trapped in the rubble.

None of us knows when an ordinary day might suddenly become an emergency, or when our family, friends or neighbors might need us. That realization doesn’t make me fearful. It makes me grateful: for my health, my family, my friends, my community and all that I have. It also strengthens my commitment to taking of my health and fitness and encouraging others to do the same.

Fitness cannot protect us from every tragedy. But strength, endurance and resilience can matter when circumstances are at their worst: when we may need to carry someone, move quickly, endure hardship or remain capable while helping others. We don’t train only to look better, perform better or add years to our lives. We train so we have the capacity to act when life demands more from us.

Pray for the people of Nepal and Tibet. Appreciate your people. Take care of yourself. Build your capacity. We never know when it may be needed.

Cool Crops

Limited Edition Crop T’s now in the ProShop.
Fact: Diablo barely breaks-even (at best) on t-shirts & other apparel.
Why?
Because we’re not a clothing store and it’s advertising for us.
But, we do have fun designing shirts & stuff.  Hope you like ’em!

OG Of The Week – Davida Jones

Davida Jones is celebrating her 17th year as a member of the Diablo family this week!
Left: Davida no-shoe deadlifts in Feb 2011.
Right: Davida after ‘Murph in 2021

Davida (and her husband Tom) represent everything great about our Diablo Community. She is a Mom, a full-time nurse, and lover (and caretaker) of all pets – including those without homes. Since 2009, Davida has been coming consistently every week, and almost always in class or in Open Gym with her friends. She’s always down for a competition -as a competitor, as a judge or as a passionate fan. She has competed in 13 CrossFit Opens and qualified for 4 Quarterfinals as a Master.
Remarkably, during her 17 years, she has accumulated 2,993 class workouts!!  In just a few days, she’ll be crossing the 3000 barrier: only the 6th person in Diablo history!

Well done, Davida. And, thank you for making our community better.

CROSSFIT EDU: “VIRTUOSITY”

In “Fundamentals, Virtuosity, and Mastery,” Greg Glassman defines virtuosity as “performing the common uncommonly well.” He argues that athletes and coaches are naturally tempted to rush toward advanced, creative, and impressive movements before establishing mastery of the basics. This “novice’s curse” produces weak fundamentals, slows progress, increases injury risk, and ultimately limits fitness.

For CrossFit trainers, the message is simple: relentlessly coach the foundational movements and build advanced skills only upon sound mechanics. Effective programming does not need to be elaborate: skill practice, thoughtful coaching, and short, intense couplets or triplets remain extraordinarily potent. Variety and play are valuable, but as my friend and former biz partner, Jeremy Jones would say: “they are the dessert, not the meal.” True coaching mastery is demonstrated not by complexity, but by helping athletes perform the fundamentals exceptionally well.

CRAIG’S LIST: Stuff I’m Watching, Reading, Using or Listening to…

BOOK:  Fittest On Earth: 20 Years of the CrossFit Games – Coffee Table Book. – $165! Ok, nostalgia got me, ’cause I’ve been to every Games except 2007 and 2020. But, this book has delivered – not only nostalgia, but also detailed history on every year’s events that made me truly appreciate the work that the athletes and the Games team put in every year to make this annual competition so amazing. If you’re a fan of the CrossFit Games, this book is WORTH every penny. You’ll find yourself turning the pages often to ready the cool stories or just be impressed by the awesome photography.

CLASSIC MOVIE: Last of The Mohicans – Amazon Prime. This one is for Davida. She’s never seen it. It is one of Yvonne and my favorite all-time movies. We’ve watched it probably 3 or 4 times. It is a historical drama war film set in 1775 during the French and Indian War – starring Daniel Day Lewisa and Madeline Stowe. The film is a powerful action/love story and a bit violent. The screenplay is beautiful. The sound rrack it one of my favorites of all-time -epic.
