We want YOU .. to join the OPEN!
The CrossFit Games Open is a big part of Diablo CrossFit’s legacy. A large number of our members participate every year! It is scary – for everyone, including Diablo’s top athletes and our newest members. Yet, 100’s of thousands of CrossFit enthusiasts around the world participate in the Open – the 1st stage of the competition to crown the Fittest Athletes in the World. Each week for 5 weeks (Feb 22 – Mar 26), an Open workout is announced on Thursday, and has to be completed by the following Monday. The Open gives all CrossFitters (Open, Teens, Scaled & Masters) a chance to test ourselves together against each other – and especially, against our past selves.
Important Diablo Open Updates
In 2018, we’re going to make this a blast, with our “Intramural Open”. But first, here are some administrative changes to the Open at Diablo CrossFit.
- Open Workouts WILL be programmed into Diablo’s Workout of the Day! Moxie-San Jose will have the Open Workout on Fridays. Pleasant Hill will have the workout on Saturdays. However, please make every attempt to complete your Open Workout at our scheduled events: Friday Night Lights (SJ) & Saturday Main Event (PH).
- IMPORTANT: Everyone MUST also pass the CrossFit Judges Course. After you have registered for the Open, please take the Judges course. This $10 course will help you as an athlete to understand “range of motion”, reps vs. no reps, standards for each workout. It will also help us ensure that Diablo has sufficient judges for everyone who participates AND that standards are being upheld!
Now for the fun stuff:
Introducing “The Intramural Open”
This year, we’re going to make the Open a little more interesting and a lot more fun. “The Intramural Open” will bring everyone of every ability together on teams that will compete for points. At the end of the Open (Mar 22), the team with the most points will be crowned the winner!
THE SCORING SYSTEM Everyone can contribute points. All you have to do is register for the Open, and complete the workouts! And, along the way there will be other scoring opportunities.
+1 Point – Workout Completion: every member of a team that completes an Open workout at Diablo CrossFit AND submits their score online to the CrossFit Games website each week earns one point. Maximum one point per athlete per workout. This will produce the most points for each team!
+1 Point – Workout Completion AT Friday Night Lights or Saturday Main Event: every member of a team that completes an Open workout during our Fri Night Lights or Sat Main Event will receive 1 point.
+1 Point – Top 3 Open M/W: every male AND female member who places among the Top 3 at Diablo CrossFit for each workout (RX) gets an extra point for their team.
+1 Point – Top 3 Scaled M/W: every male AND female member who places among the Top 3 at Diablo CrossFit for each scaled version of the Open workout gets an extra point for their team.
+1 Point – Top 3 Masters M/W: every male AND female member who places among the Top 3 at Diablo CrossFit for each Masters version 35+ of the Open workout gets an extra point for their team. All age groups compete together as one.
+1 Point – Top 5 Judges: the top 5 individuals with the most athletes judged will earn an extra point for their team.
+1 Point – New PR: every athlete who achieves a personal record on a movement (a lift, a pull-up, toes-to-bar, muscle-up) will receive 1 point. Note: improving on a repeat workout will not count, since we expect everyone to do better than last year.
+3 Points – Spirit of the Open: Each week we will pick one athlete who displays amazing SPIRIT during that week’s workouts. You’ll find this person cheering others on, volunteering to judge others, helping people get prepared, doing something amazing they never thought possible, gaining a new skill, etc.
REGISTRATION The only thing you need to do to participate in the Intramural Open is to register for the CrossFit Games Open AND Pass the Judges Course. Don’t worry if you are new or unsure about your ability level. THERE IS A SCALED DIVISION! Please be sure to select Diablo CrossFit or Diablo CrossFit Moxie as your affiliate. This does not affect your Intramural Team placement.
THE DRAFT On February 11th, Coaches Craig, Jamie, Payam, Jennifer & Natalie will equally divide Coaches and competition athletes into four teams. Then, team Captains will be selected. All athletes who are registered for the CrossFit Games Open before that date will be automatically put into the Draft pool.
The team Captains will complete the rest of the selection of our participating members using a lottery system. They will draw team names from a hat. Team Captains will rotate draws, and then notify the athletes of their team that they have been drafted! We will release all the details of the Draft ASAP so you can find out what team you are on. After that Draft the Captains have freedom to recruit the remainder of the gym and they’ll be asking YOU!
That’s where you come in. If you are not signed up for The Open by the time of the Draft then you’ll likely be courted by one of our Team Captains to join their team – probably more than one. It will be your choice!
THE WORKOUTS Our Open workouts will take place at the same time every week. Group heats will be scheduled as classes on MB.
- Moxie: Friday Night Lights – 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM
- PHill: Saturday Main Event – 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
When you arrive, you’ll need to also select a time slot during your heat time. There will be a sign-up on a whiteboard which will be available first come first serve. Please show up as early to warm-up, to sign up for a time slot, help judge, take pictures and cheer everyone on! Bring friends or family to spectate and contribute to the cheering crowd.

Multiple Attempts or Make-Ups: Athletes will be allowed to make up workouts or re-test during Open Gym hours with a Certified Judge only.
Have Fun!: Our focus is on FUN. We want participation because it will make you fitter, and it will get you high-fives and you’ll be happy and love life more and glow and stuff.
