March 2019 Nutrition Challenge!
As part of our #fitnessisalifestyle campaign, I am going to create small nutrition challenges that you can work on each month! The goal isn’t perfection here.. it’s just to become a “little bit better” than you were yesterday. This is how we create new habits and lasting change. One small step at a time. Let’s use each other for motivation and new ideas!!
The challenge for MARCH is:
TRY ONE NEW RECIPE A WEEK!
Variety is the spice of life! Just like we need new clothes, shoes and workouts to keep from getting bored – we also need new foods and recipes. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut buying the same foods and making the same dishes week after week. The problem with this is that we get extremely bored with our food and the chips, crackers, and treats that we can normally stay away from can become harder to resist. They provide a certain pleasure from food that we can also get by keeping things fresh with new recipes!
Have you ever tried a new dish and been extremely proud of how it turned out? This excitement makes the meal much more satisfying and can even help with overeating. Your overall fulfillment with a meal begins with smelling and seeing the food. Eating the same chicken salad out of a tupperware container day in and day out gets old really fast and eventually you ‘want something else’.
Another reason for getting variety is NUTRIENTS! We get different vitamins, minerals, etc. from different foods so it’s best to mix up what you are eating. The gold standard would be to eat local foods that are in season for the best nutrient values. Farmers’ Market anyone : )
These days it’s so easy to get new ideas with the internet… check out Instagram or Pinterest and follow your favorite pages. Looking for an idea for date night? Have a Pinterest night! Search and find a fun new recipe – shop, prep, cook and enjoy together! Or better yet, ask your classmate the last new recipe they tried and share with each other!
