Row’d Royalty 2019

About Row'd Royalty

Each week for 4 weeks, a rowing workout for the Concept 2 Erg will be announced. You’ll have 4 days to complete the workout and submit your score online with a picture of your monitor. At the end of 4 weeks we will crown the Kings & Queens of the rowers.
Cash prizes are awarded to the top 3 male & female rowers in the Open Division for the Standard & Tall Categories. The winning Team receives a new Concept 2 Rower (or Bike or Ski Erg). 2nd & 3rd place teams receive cash prizes.

ROW’D ROYALTY HISTORY

Row’d Royalty was born at Diablo CrossFit in 2012 in California. Several Diablo members claimed to be the “best rower” and were always eager to prove themselves. So, I created “Row’d Royalty,” an annual indoor rowing competition spanning 4 weeks and a variety of workouts with the winners crowned “The King & Queen of the Rower”.

Row’d Royalty was a huge hit with everyone at Diablo so, in 2015 I moved the competition online and introduced Row’d Royalty to the world. Concept 2 joined us as our premiere sponsor and our registration exploded. Today, indoor rowers from around the world participate, including former Olympic Rowing Medalists, Crash B winners and top CrossFit athletes.

WHY WE ARE UNIQUE: TALL & STANDARD

In my 13 years of indoor rowing and coaching, I have learned that the biggest difference in an athlete’s performance on a Concept 2 erg is height, which primarily affects the length of the pull. In order to make our competition more inclusive AND more competitive, we created the “Standard” and “Tall” categories.
  • Standard (Women under 5′ 6″ / Men under 5′ 11″)
  • Tall (Women 5′ 6″ and above / Men 5′ 11″ and above)
Similarly, in 1974 the International Rowing Federation (FISA) added a “Lightweight” class to rowing “to encourage more universality in the sport especially among nations with less statuesque people.”

WHY TEAMS?

Our “Team” category was born in the CrossFit world as “affiliate teams.”  In the beginning we simply combined the scores of the 4 top scoring athletes in a gym. It was a great way to create energy and interest in rowing in the gym. Lots of athletes prefer competing on a team rather than as an individual. As the competition grew, we decided to change the rules to allow any four athletes from anywhere to combine their scores as team. This created a very competitive category that proved to be fun to follow on the leaderboard. It also helped encourage a lot of athletes to participate that might not otherwise.
