I’m particularly proud of that damn ball.
I smiled and said, “Yep. THIS is THAT ball.”
Then one of the men on the Reykjavík team said, “Did you know that we” (pointing to his teammate) “finished first and second in the WORLD on 26.1?”
At first, I thought they were kidding. Then they told me the story: Rökkvi Guðnason (left, above) did the workout first and finished in an incredible 11:05. His teammate, Bjarni Leifs Kjartansson, went immediately afterward and beat him by six seconds—finishing first in the world in 10:59!
Of course, I insisted that they both sign the ball and pose for pictures.
I’ll call this one “CrossFit Karma.” Wild story, great guys and incredible athletes.

THE GAMES R US
The CrossFit Games are the ultimate manifestation of what we do every day—taken to the extreme.
They demonstrate the extraordinary potential of human fitness: maximum work capacity across broad time and modal domains. The athletes must lift, run, jump, climb, swim, cycle, perform advanced gymnastics and adapt to whatever challenge is put in front of them. They are specialists at not specializing.
But it’s important to remember that extreme fitness or, more accurately, extreme athletic performance, is not necessarily extreme wellness on CrossFit’s sickness-wellness-fitness continuum.
As in every professional sport, elite CrossFit athletes push their bodies to the outer limits of performance. The training volume required to compete at that level can increase the risk of overuse injuries, acute injuries, physical burnout and other conditions that can negatively affect long-term wellness. The CrossFit Games measure competitive performance—not perfect health.
For most of us, CrossFit serves a different purpose. We train to become stronger, healthier, more capable and more resilient. We want to improve our quality of life, protect our independence and be prepared for whatever challenges life throws at us.
So, look to the Games athletes for inspiration. Let their performances motivate you to train harder, move better and pursue your own potential. Enjoy the Games as an incredible sport and as a celebration of individual effort, perseverance and human capability.
And then come back to Diablo and keep working on the fittest, healthiest version of you.
