THE GAMES ARE BACK: On Friday & Saturday last week, the top 30 men and women competed in the 1st stage of the CrossFit Games. The competition was online at the athletes’ home gyms. At the end of the competition, the top 5 men and 5 women moved on to the next stage, which will be held in Aromas beginning October 19th. 4 of the 7 total workouts were scaled-up versions of CrossFit Girl wods: Friendly Fran, Damn Diane, Nasty Nancy & Awful Annie . The remaining workouts included a max-effort front squat, a 1000m row, and a handstand hold for time.
This event was an amazing feat by CrossFit and the athletes. Official judges traveled to all 60 athletes’ locations to officiate the workouts. Equipment was shipped to all locations. And workouts were scheduled across multiple time zones in order to create a fair environment for everyone. Then, results were compiled and broadcast to the public. All of the athletes’ performances are available on YouTube – I highly recommend watching these performances. Check out their range of motion, their efficiency and their amazing work capacity. And, they suffer – just like we do.
Top Five Women
- Tia-Clair Toomey
- Brooke Wells
- Haley Adams
- Katrin Davidstottir
- Kari Pearce
Big story: Kari Pearce’s comeback on Saturday to earn a trip to Aromas. And, Kara Saunders 1st place finish on the last workout – narrowly missing a qualifying spot.
Top Five Men
- Mat Fraser
- Noah Ohlsen
- Justin Medeiros
- Samuel Kwant
- Jeffrey Adler
Big story: Chandler Smith was picked by most experts as a sure-thing top 5 finisher, but finished 2 points out after a 20th place finish on the 6th workout, the Handstand Hold and an 11th place finish on the last workout, Awful Annie.
Crazy story: Diablo’s Payam Saljoughian sent me a clip of qualifier Jeffrey Adler falling to the ground after completing the 1st workout, Friendly Fran, – and his coach and judge shouting at him to finish. He got up and ran to the finish line, finishing in 4:00. Had he stayed on the ground 1 more second, he would have finished 1 place lower in workout 1 and not qualified for Aromas.

CRAIG’S LIST (stuff I’m reading or listening to.. or talking about):
How I Built This (Book) – Guy Raz – This one just hit Audible and I’m loving it. The introduction alone will give you chills and make you cry. How I Built This is an awesome podcast which is essentially Guy Raz interviewing successful entrepreneurs talking about how they got started and built their very successful companies. This book is essentially a compilation of the common, yet essential themes for success and a selection of the most interesting stories. If you’ve thought about starting your own business or, you want to know what it’s like, you’re going to likely be very surprised by the failures and extreme challenges that most successful entrepreneurs have faced. Great read/listen.
Flame Retardants May Affect Social Behavior In Small Children. – Ugh! This one popped up as a Rhonda Patrick tweet last week. It certainly gives pause to consider how the abundance of chemicals in our daily lives might impact long term health. Obviously flame retardants have tremendous benefits, but it’s difficult to measure the long term risks.
Make it an awesome week!
