ITS MENTAL – SUB 2HR MARATHON

I used to run marathons. From 2000 – 2005, I ran six marathons – one a year – putting in a lot of miles every day to improve my endurance. My training friends and I kept up on the sport and knew what it took to qualify for Boston and other races. We also talked about elite marathoners and how much faster they were than recreational runners. And, we all speculated on whether the 2 hour time barrier would ever be broken. At the time, the world record was 2:04:55. Yesterday, the 2 hour barrier was literally shattered by 30 seconds – in a city street race (not on a track!).

For years, the 2-hour marathon felt like one of those barriers that lived in the category of “maybe someday” — a feat so extreme that many believed it might never happen in a real race. Then yesterday in London, Sabastian Sawe did it. He ran 1:59:30, becoming the first man ever to break 2 hours in an official marathon. That’s 26.2 miles at a 4:33.6 per mile pace!!  Even more remarkable, the second-place finisher, Yomif Kejelcha, also went under 2 hours. In a single morning, the impossible became real… twice.

That’s what happens when a mental barrier gets broken. History has shown us this before. When Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile (in a ONE MILE race) it didn’t stay a once-in-a-lifetime miracle for long. Once human beings see that something can be done, they begin to believe it can be done — and belief changes performance. Social proof is powerful. The mind stops treating the goal as fantasy and starts treating it as a target.

There’s a lesson there for us. In CrossFit, in business, and in life, we often fail long before our body or circumstances force us to. We fail because we quietly decide something is beyond us. But once we believe a goal is possible – especially when we see others like us doing it – our effort sharpens, our persistence increases, and our standards rise. Often the biggest barrier isn’t physical at all, instead, it’s the story we tell ourselves about what can’t be done. Ironically, if you CrossFit, it’s very likely that you’re breaking down barriers for your family, your friends or coworkers who didn’t think that they could ever do it.

Let’s keep breaking barriers. Thanks for the inspiration, Sabastian!

ALL MASTERS ATHLETES INVITED:  MASTERS TEAMS SEMIFINAL-ISH
Diablo recently received an invitation for the 2026 CrossFit Games Online Team SemiFinals – happening June 4th – 7th. Similar to the Online Age Group SemiFinals, Teams of 4 athletes have 4 days to complete 4-5 workouts and submit their results. The top 10 or 20 athletes advance to the CrossFit Games. Unfortunately, several of Diablo’s top m/f athletes are unable to compete on the Team this year. However, many of our age-group athletes would LOVE to compete on a team BUT, CrossFit does not have an official “Masters Teams” category at the Games.

So, Coach Jamie Lee and I decided to create a “Shadow” SemiFinal Masters Team Competition: “MASTERS MADNESS 2026” which will take place the exact dates and times of the official CFG Online Team SemiFinals.  COST: $30 PER TEAM (only $7.50 per person!)

Our objective: create a very fun team competition experience for CrossFit Affiliates and their Masters Athletes.

Here’s how it will work:

  • Masters Madness Teams MUST have 2 Men & 2 Women – all in the same age group (see below)
  • Masters Madness Team Age Groups are as follows:
    > 40-49 | 50-59 | 60+
  • All Teams Must Register online at Competition Corner and list all athletes & ages ($30 per team)
  • As soon as CrossFit announces the official Team SemiFinal workouts, Jamie will quickly create age-group scaled versions of the workouts.
  • Registered Masters Teams will have to follow the same workout schedule for completion and score submissions.
  • Workouts should be completed using a CrossFit Affiliate coach or judge for verification.
  • Scores MUST be submitted to the official Masters Madness website on Competition Corner.
  • Videos are NOT required. However, video verification of workouts may be requested for prizes.
  • Prizes MAY be awarded if we get enough people to register for this thing.

This competition is OPEN to CrossFit Affiliates everywhere! .

  • HIKING – Pinnacles National Park. Want an incredible day-hike (caving) experience for you, your kids or visiting family and friends? Take them to Pinnacles National Park, just south of Hollister. Most of the hikes are moderate to easy, but the scenery and cave experiences are epic. My daughter and I drove down in the late morning (2.5h from Walnut Creek), hiked to the Bear Gulch Reservoir  via the Moses Spring Trail – about 3 miles round trip. We were home by 7:30P. We’ll be going back again soon to hit some other trails & caves.

  • YOUTUBE:  Is CrossFit as Bad as its Reputation Suggests?  This “Careful Boys” podcast, top weightlifters give an assessment of what they think is the BEST overall fitness program / athlete.  This conversation will make you feel good about what we do.

  • AUDIO BOOK: The Count Of Monte Cristo  Alexandre Dumas – I’m listening to this AND Yvonne and I are watching the weekly series on PBS (via Amazon Prime). This is one of those I’ve always wanted to read.. and I’m finally doing it. It’s fantastic, as is the series on PBS.

Make it an awesome week!
